Instagram Launches Profile Badges

Instagram just launched Instagram badges, a super-easy way to help users promote and share their Instagram profiles across the web.

[More from Mashable: Facebook Tests Photo Sync For iOS [VIDEO]]

Instagram badges are similar to badges and buttons offered by Twitter, Google+ and Facebook.

To get an Instagram badge, just visit http://instagram.com/accounts/badges and select the icon you want, then copy the JavaScript and paste it on your website, Tumblr or blog. It looks like this:

[More from Mashable: Facebook Is No Longer a Democracy]

I've done it on my own personal website in one of my sidebars:

The goal with Instagram badges is to help brands (and users) promote their official profiles with fans across the web. Because users can now follow profiles online, it might also drive social traffic.

Even before it was acquired by Facebook, Instagram was popular with brands and celebrities. Since the acquisition, we've seen the Facebook team take a more focused look at how brands can use Instagram as part of a broader social strategy.

What do you think of the new Instagram badges? Will you install one on your website or blog? Let us know in the comments.

Give the Gift of a Home Theater PC with These Media Center Builds

Give the Gift of a Home Theater PC with These Media Center BuildsKnow someone whose home theater is in need of an upgrade? A custom home theater PC is a great gift, no matter what your budget is. Here are three different builds that will fit any set of needs.

Home theater PCs can do everything from playing simple videos to streaming from the internet and even playing video games. What you build will be based on what you want to do. Here, we're providing three different HTPC builds:

  1. A tiny, silent, cheap, low-powered media center the size of a deck of cards that can play all your basic media in HD
  2. An inexpensive computer that can play HD video, and provides tons of beautiful, fast-loading menus for a fairly low cost
  3. A powerful, but still small and quiet PC that can play your saved media, play DVDs and Blu-Ray discs, stream HD video from the internet, and even run retro or modern video games you desire

In this guide, we'll provide three specific builds that fit these niches, as well as a few customization options to help you craft the perfect machine for your giftee's needs.

The Tiny Raspbmc Box

Give the Gift of a Home Theater PC with These Media Center BuildsThe Raspberry Pi provides the perfect starting point for the smallest, cheapest media center you can build. It uses a special build of XBMC and requires only a few parts:

Seriously. That's it. You'll need a few other things on hand like an HDMI cable to hook it up, an SD card to install the software, and a Micro USB cable to power the whole thing, but as far as the build's hardware goes, all you need is the Pi and a case. Heck, if you wanted to save a few bucks, you could even build a case yourself out of LEGO or print one out with construction paper. The world is your oyster. Click here for more details on what you'll need to do once you've got the hardware.

Note that this is the bare minimum when it comes to media centers. Don't expect fast, beautiful menus or HD video streaming from the internet. You can play your locally saved HD videos, but that's about it.

The Midrange Media Center

Give the Gift of a Home Theater PC with These Media Center BuildsIf you want something a bit more powerful than the Pi?whose menus can be a little sluggish?you'll want to build yourself a more powerful computer. This one's fully capable of playing whatever media files you throw at it, and is powerful enough to give you quicker access to the beautiful menus of a program like XBMC or Plex?all for a little under $300. You'll need:

This build is slightly better than the Raspberry Pi build, offering some faster hardware for speedier, more graphics-intense menus as well as customizability. It still won't be able to stream media very well, but it'll play your local HD files with ease. We recommend XBMCbuntu for your operating system, but you could also install a regular Linux distribution and use another media center application like Plex.

Note that you could also buy a pre-built barebones system like the Zotac ZBOXNANO-AD10-U, though you won't be able to customize it very much. And, speaking of which...

Upgrade Options

We recommend the following upgrades for a more complete media center experience:

Buy this build on PCPartPicker ($268.53).

The Ultimate HTPC for Playing, Streaming, and Gaming

If you want the complete media center experience, you'll need a more powerful build. Here is our dream media center build, which for $500 can play any video you throw at it, stream from services like Hulu and Amazon, and even play your favorite video games?from retro NES games all the way up to modern PC games. Here's what you'll need:

This beastly build will do just about whatever you want it to: you can play your local media, watch Blu-Ray discs, stream HD videos from services like Hulu and Amazon, and play just about any video game you can think of on moderately good settings.

Check out our full build guide for this media center for more info on setting it all up.

Upgrade Options

We recommend the following upgrades for a more complete media center experience:

  • A more powerful APU for even better gaming: If you want to play more modern games like Skyrim or Battlefield 3, you'll want a more powerful APU to get the best graphics possible. Grab the A6-3500 ($70) or A8-3870K ($100) from AMD to boost some of that graphics power.
  • A bigger hard drive for storing your movies: The above build will let you hold a few movies on the HTPC, and you can stream as many movies as you want from another computer or home server. But, if you want to store a larger collection of videos on the HTPC itself, we recommend upgrading to the 2TB version of that Western Digital Caviar Green ($110)
  • Video game controllers: If you plan on playing video games, you'll want a couple of solid gamepads like the Xbox 360 controllers ($35 each), which work fantastically with Windows

Buy this build on PCPartPicker ($371.67).

Putting Them All Together

Once you've got all your hardware, check our our computer building guide to learn how to put it all together. Of course, building the hardware is only half the battle with a home theater PC. You'll also need to decide what you want to use for a remote (your phone will work fine for free, but a few bucks can get you much more), so check out our HTPC remote guide for more info. And, of course, see our ultimate guides to XBMC and Plex for setting up the media center software of your choice.

A special thanks goes out to everyone who provided suggestions last week! It made putting together these guides a lot easier, and a better fit for you.

Daily Tips for Business: Workplace Communication - pkydrucs's ...

Well, as an entrepreneur I used to laugh at people who wanted to come to work for my company and on their resume they put that they had a Business Communications Degree. I used to think that they studied business communications because it was an easy subject in school, one that you could learn without having to deal with too much math, perhaps even taking the easy way out. Nevertheless workplace communication is an essential tool, and without it your business will not operate efficiently, and you are bound to get your wires crossed more often than not.

Mind-reading scan locates site of meaning in the brain

MEANINGS of words can be hard to locate when they are on the tip of your tongue, let alone in the brain. Now, for the first time, patterns of brain activity have been matched with the meanings of specific words. The discovery is a step forward in our attempts to read thoughts from brain activity alone, and could help doctors identify awareness in people with brain damage.

Machines can already eavesdrop on our brains to distinguish which words we are listening toMovie Camera, but Joao Correia at Maastricht University in the Netherlands wanted to get beyond the brain's representation of the words themselves and identify the activity that underlies their meaning. Somewhere in the brain, he hypothesised, written and spoken representations of words are integrated and meaning is processed. "We wanted to find the hub," he says.

To begin the hunt, Correia and his colleagues used an fMRI scanner to study the brain activity of eight bilingual volunteers as they listened to the names of four animals, bull, horse, shark and duck, spoken in English.

The team monitored patterns of neural activity in the left anterior temporal cortex - known to be involved in a range of semantic tasks - and trained an algorithm to identify which word a participant had heard based on the pattern of activity.

Since the team wanted to pinpoint activity related to meaning, they picked words that were as similar as possible - all four contain one syllable and belong to the concept of animals. They also chose words that would have been learned at roughly the same time of life and took a similar time for the brain to process.

They then tested whether the differences in brain activity were related to the sound of the word or its meaning by testing whether the algorithm could identify the correct animal while the participants listened to the Dutch version of the word.

The system was still able to identify which animal had been named, despite being trained with patterns generated for English words. For example, the word "horse" and its Dutch equivalent "paard" gave rise to the same brain pattern, suggesting that the activity represented the word's meaning - the concept of a horse. The team presented the work at the Society for the Neurobiology of Language Conference in San Sebasti?n, Spain, last month.

"This type of pattern recognition approach is a very exciting scientific tool for investigating how and where knowledge is represented in the brain," says Zoe Woodhead at University College London, who wasn't involved in the study. "Words that mean the same thing in different languages activate the same set of neurons encoding that concept, regardless of the fact that the two words look and sound completely different."

As resolutions in brain imaging improve, Correia predicts that a greater number of words will be predicted from brain activity alone. In principle, it might even be possible to identify whole sentences in real time, he says.

"The science fiction gadget that everyone wants is a mind-reading machine," says Matt Davis at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, UK. "This study is a useful contribution to that. It's helpful to know where to look."

However, the brain patterns that Correia identified were unique to each person. Brains are like faces - the eyes, nose and mouth are all in the same place, but the details can be different, says Davis. "The meanings might be stored in the same area, but the actual neurons would be idiosyncratic." To read someone's mind, a machine would first need to learn that individual's unique representation of each word. "You would have to scan a person as they thought their way through a dictionary," says Davis.

For now, knowing where to look for brain activity relating to meaning could help doctors identify awareness in people who have disorders of consciousness, such as locked-in syndrome. When a person hears a word that has two meanings, such as "bark", the brain processes the related sentence in a different way to an unambiguous one. "The brain needs to work a bit harder to understand a sentence with these words," Davis says.

This extra effort can be identified in a brain scan and is being used by Davis's team to work out whether a person with brain damage is processing meaning. The ability to pinpoint where different types of meaning exist in the brain will help to refine this technique, he says.

Negotiation and Deal Making | orlandobands

Negotiating and deal making?takes place in many different situations and in many different aspects of life. For now, however, I would like to focus on negotiating and deal making within the entertainment industry. There are several techniques and methods that can be used in negotiating. The goal is to know how to use them effectively in those different types of situations and to come to the best mutual agreement possible. This cannot be stressed enough when it comes to entertainment, where cutthroat business is oftentimes heard of.

Rather than taking my word for this, I would like to share a short synopsis of an interview I had with a professional in the music industry. I had the opportunity to meet with Ben Gardner (CEO and founder of Orlandobands.com) the other day and had an excellent, in-depth interview.?Orlandobands.com?is based in Orlando, FL and was generally established around 2003 as a volunteered and seasonal project. In 2008, Ben started to get more serious and pursue the business more heavily. During the interview, I only asked Ben a few questions, but he gave me an abundance of content on negotiating and deal making with venues, bands, and/or clients.
I first asked him to tell me how he went about negotiating and what techniques or methods he used.? Immediately, Ben told me he would run through the process of booking a venue and/or selling a service to a client. He brought up the importance of being prepared. Without being prepared and then going into a negotiation, you are mostly likely to fail. You do this by developing objective criteria that are legitimate and practical. For example, you cannot go to a sponsor and tell them you have a great event planned without having the venue yet. The sponsor is going to want to know where and when the event is, how much it is going to cost them, why they should sponsor the event, and what not. These are things a negotiator needs to bring to the table and be ready to deliver.

From there, Ben likes to ask questions to find out the underlying interests of the other party. By doing so, Ben is able to find merit in their reasoning to reach a mutual agreement. Determining each other?s interests makes for a better negotiation. One tactic that he does use is drafting tentative commitments that each party can agree upon. This is a more gradual process, but it allows for these tentative commitments to be changed within reasoning. It is important to have valid reasons that are relevant to the underlying interests of each party. Without reason, proposals seem positional and parties may become defensive.

This all goes along with good communication?being specific and clear on what your interests are and listening to what the other party?s interests are. For example, Ben mentions how different it is to talk with bands than it is to talk with industry professionals, or just amateurs and professionals in general. Understanding the character, values, and competence level of your negotiating party must be considered. If you are negotiating with an amateur, they may not know certain terminology or industry standards. More reasoning and objective criteria may be needed. If you were negotiating with a seasoned professional, you may not have to explain everything so much in detail. Either way, proposals should be specific and clear.

We all know that negotiations do not always go as well as we would like them to. We are humans and we have emotions. The important concept to keep in mind here is to separate the people from the problem. I asked Ben if he has had these encounters and how he dealt with them. He said that you have to keep your emotions under control. Things will go wrong and frustrations will come about, but it does not pay to get out of hand and start attacking the people involved. Focus on the problem at hand. An example scenario could be walking into a venue, realizing that their sound system is blown, and having to find one within 2 hours; the band members have not shown up yet; the crew members are running late; and everything else just seems to be going wrong. Ben says this type of scenario happens quite often, and yes, he does get upset and fast paced, but he keeps his emotions in check. Starting to blame others and attack them verbally will only make matters worse. Be soft on the people and hard on the problem. With separation, the problem at hand can be resolved more effectively, if not efficiently.

In light of all this, I asked Ben what his BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement) would be. Basically, this would be asking, ?What would happen if no agreement is reached?? In Ben?s case, and I am sure in many business situations, the BATNA would be to contact an attorney or go to litigation. However, the BATNA can be costly and more time consuming. And in essence, it may just end up not being worth the trouble. So, coming to a mutual agreement in the first place is more beneficial.

I want to thank Ben for his time and giving me his insight on negotiating practices. I personally admire the way he handles business and treats his clients, staff, and other industry professionals. He is versed well in negotiation and deal making, and brings credibility to how genuine businesses should be run. Keeping peace between parties is one of the main goals in negotiations. I hope that the techniques and methods that Ben has shared and were presented have helped any of you, as it has for me.

Being an entrepreneur at heart, I have found that my place resides within the business industry--particularly entertainment, real estate, and health. I am always open to new opportunities and learning experiences. I am a very self-driven individual who likes to set goals and achieve them. I strive for success, but realize that with success also comes failure. Great leaders are those who learn quickly and most effectively from their mistakes. I tend to be a perfectionist but have found that there are differences between perfectionism and excellence, so effectively maintaining a balance between these two is key.

On Election Night, score a victory for traditional media

While people used social media to share Election Night comments, a surge in news site traffic and robust TV viewership showed so-called legacy media are still the preeminent sources for news.

Social media may be the darling of a mobile generation weaned on interactivity and speed, but Election Night this year delivered a small silver lining of good news to so-called legacy media outlets such as newspapers and television.

With massive increases in traffic?on news sites linked to such outlets as The New York Times and ABC News and with 66 million viewers watching TV, news of the legacy media?s death ? to?paraphrase Mark Twain ? is greatly exaggerated.

?Content is still king,? says Len Shyles, communication professor at Villanova University in Philadelphia.

While many people now interact with social media such as Twitter and Facebook while they are watching TV, Professor Shyles says, ?they are commenting on it, messing around with it, having fun with what they just heard, and sharing it with others.?

But, he points out, the legacy media is still the pre-eminent source, ?and social media is still ancillary.?

Legacy media are stage setters for social media actors, agrees Charles Dunn, author of ?The Seven Laws of Presidential leadership.?

Social media have come into their own as major players in political debate, he says via e-mail,??but legacy media continue to play the primary role in setting the stage for debate and discussion about political issues and personalities.?

Certainly the allocation of resources in the two campaigns leading up to Tuesday night supports this view.

According to the most recent report from the Wesleyan Media Project, the number of TV ads aired in the presidential general election passed the one million mark as of Oct. 29. The two candidates, their party committees, and supporting interest groups sponsored 1,015,615 ads since June 1, a 39.1 percent increase over 2008 and a 41 percent increase over 2004.

A recent student-conducted study from the Farmer School of Business at Miami University in Ohio also supports this media consumption model. When asked what media had the most influence on their knowledge of the issues in this election, 29 percent of student respondents said Fox News, 22 percent said social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and 12 percent said MSNBC.

Saturday marked the first of what will be three days of Veterans Day commemorations across the United States.

The holiday falls on a Sunday, and the federal observance is on Monday. It's the first such day honoring the men and women who served in uniform since the last U.S. troops left Iraq in December 2011.

It's also a chance to thank those who stormed the beaches during World War II ? a population that is rapidly shrinking with most of those former troops now in their 80s and 90s.

At the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, a steady stream of visitors arrived Saturday morning as the names of the 58,000 people on the wall were being read over a loudspeaker.

Some visitors took pictures, others made rubbings of names, and some left mementos: a leather jacket, a flag made out of construction paper, pictures of young soldiers and even several snow globes with an American eagle inside.

Alfred A. Atwood, 65, of Chattanooga, Tenn., was visiting the wall for the first time.

"I've just never been able to do it," Atwood said of visiting the memorial, which was completed in 1982.

Atwood, who later became a police detective, said he knows a number of people on the wall, but the one name he wanted to find Saturday was his friend Ronald L. Wright. The two had grown up together, and when Atwood decided to join the Marines at 18 there was no stopping Wright, Atwood said.

Wright died in 1968 when he stepped on a land mine, Atwood said, and Wright's mother always blamed him for her son's death. He's never been able to bring himself to visit his friend's grave, he said.

On Saturday he found Wright's name on panel 44E, row 60, and he ran his fingers over it, shaking his head.

"I'm still in the blocking stage. I want to go somewhere and sit down and think a minute," he said after seeing Wright's name. "All I can see when I was touching and reading his name was his mother's face telling me I got her son killed."

A half-dozen women of various ages knitted intently near a pile of hand-made scarves while frail, silver-haired men sat waiting for a chance to tell their war stories Saturday as tourists and veterans filed into the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

The museum planned a series of events to celebrate the Veterans Day weekend.

The knitters had gathered to commemorate 1940s homefront efforts to supply World War II troops with warm socks and sweaters.

Nearby, Tom Blakey, 92, of New Orleans sat behind a small table with two grainy black and white photos of his younger self, one standing at ease in uniform in 1942, the other aboard a motorcycle in 1944. Also on the table were pictures of a bridge on the Merderet River in Normandy ? a bridge that he and fellow members of the Army's 82nd Airborne fought to secure as the D-Day invasion unfolded in 1944.

Blakey pointed with gnarled fingers at a map of the landing site and said holding the bridge was key to keeping German forces away from Utah and Omaha beaches.

"If we'd a let them get to Utah and Omaha, the men on those beaches would have been in bad shape," he said.

Blakey regularly takes part in oral history programs at the museum, an opportunity he relishes.

"What the hell else would I do with my life at this time?" he said.

At the National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass., on Cape Cod, about 1,000 people including Cub Scouts and Gold Star Mothers gathered on a crisp fall day for a short ceremony.

They then spread out to plant 56,000 flags amid the cemetery's flat gravestones, transforming the green landscape into a sea of fluttering red, white and blue.

Until last year, the cemetery did not permit flags or flag holders on graves. That changed under pressure from Paul Monti of Raynham, Mass., whose son, Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, was killed by Taliban fighters while trying to save a fellow soldier in 2006 in Afghanistan. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor and is buried at the Bourne cemetery.

Paul Monti led a brief ceremony Saturday where the pledge of allegiance was recited, Miss Massachusetts sang the national anthem and a dedication was read.

___

In the Mojave Desert in California, veterans plan to resurrect a war memorial cross that was part of a 13-year legal battle over the separation of church and state.

The Sunday ceremony on Sunrise Rock follows a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union that argued the cross was unconstitutional because it was in the Mojave National Preserve.

The Supreme Court intervened in 2010 and directed a court to consider a land swap, leading to a settlement that transferred Sunrise Rock to veterans groups in exchange for five acres of privately owned land.

Henry Sandoz, who cared for the original cross as part of a promise to a dying World War I veteran, will re-dedicate a new, 7-foot steel cross on the same hilltop.

___

Thousands of spectators are expected to line Fifth Avenue for New York City's Veterans Day Parade on Sunday.

Former Mayor Ed Koch is the grand marshal for the parade, which will run for 30 blocks, starting at 26th Street.

Also marching will be the Navajo Code Talkers, who transmitted coded messages during WWII, and other veteran groups.

Some participants in the parade are collecting coat donations for Superstorm Sandy victims.

The theme is "United we Stand" and the parade marks the 200th anniversary of The War of 1812.

The parade begins at 11:15 a.m. after a wreath-laying ceremony at the Eternal Light Monument at 24th Street. Bleachers and a reviewing stand are located at Fifth Avenue and 41st Street.

Banks extend fee waivers for storm-hit customers

Some of the nation's biggest banks have extended temporary waivers on a variety of fees and late charges for residents of states hit hard by Superstorm Sandy.

It's an effort to ease pressure on customers to make bill payments when nearly 1.8 million homes and businesses remain without power across a swath of states.

The banks themselves still face power outages, forcing the shutdown of dozens of branches and ATMs.

JPMorgan Chase Inc. said automatic refunds of certain fees for those living in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and the District of Columbia were extended until the end of business Nov. 7.

The extension applies to overdraft protection transfer, extended overdraft, returned item and insufficient funds fees, and late fees on credit cards, business and consumer loans, including mortgages, home-equity, auto and student loans.

Chase mortgage customers in those states may be able to get a 90-day moratorium on making mortgage payments. Customers should call 888-356-0023 and choose option 1 for mortgage to learn more.

Chase said about 87 percent of its total branch and ATM network in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut metro area had power restored.

Citigroup Inc. likewise extended until Nov. 7 fee waivers for overdraft protection, non-sufficient funds, late payments on credit products, early CD withdrawal and wiring funds to affected Citi customers. Citi mortgage customers should call 800-283-7918 to inquire about payment options.

The New York-based bank said more than 80 percent of its branches and ATMs were back in service.

Nov. 7 is also the date for extensions at Wells Fargo & Co. on fees it normally charges its customers for using another bank's ATMs. Wells Fargo will also allow customers with CDs to withdraw funds from these accounts without incurring an early withdrawal penalty. These fee waiver extensions are available in the storm-affected states of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Additionally, Wells Fargo is continuing to waive late fees on credit cards, certain small business and consumer loans, including home-equity, auto and student loans until Nov 7. This waiver also applies to New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and West Virginia.

Wells Fargo said 86 percent of its ATMs in the storm-affected states were back in service and 80 percent of bank branches in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania had reopened.

Customers of PNC Financial Services Inc. will waive overdraft fees until the end of business Nov. 7 in New York City, New Jersey, northeastern Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. Customers in those areas have until the close of business on Nov. 8 to bring accounts that were overdrawn current.

Customers in central Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Washington D.C. have until the end of the day Nov. 5 to avoid fees.

PNC mortgage and home equity loan customers should call 800-822-5626 to learn about late fee waivers. Student loan customers should call 800-762-1001. Credit card and consumer loan customers should call 888-762-2265. Small business loan customers should call 855-762-2365.

ATM usage is free at non-PNC machines through Nov. 7 for the all of the affected areas. PNC did not say how many branches were still closed due to the storm.

Bank of America Inc. said more than 85 its percent of its branches and ATMs were open in the affected areas.

The bank said customers affected by the storm and floods in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Virginia and the District of Columbia will automatically receive a refund on overdraft, insufficient funds and non-Bank of America ATM fees incurred as a result of storm conditions through Nov. 5.

Credit card cash advance fees and late payment fees on credit cards and some consumer and small business loans, including home equity, auto and personal loans, will also be waived.

Also, customers may qualify to receive credit line increases on their existing Bank of America Visa card and MasterCard; modify or extend payments on loans, credit cards or lines of credit; receive special assistance with lost, missing or late loan or card payments; and avoid early withdrawal penalties on bank certificates of deposit.

The bank has set up a hotline for customers impacted by the storm at 855-729-1764. Customers can use this number to request credit line increases on existing Bank of America cards or modified or extended payments on loans, credit cards and lines of credit.

HSBC said customers should call 800-975-4722 to find out about reversing fees generated as a result of the storm. The bank listed dozens of branches that remained out of service as of Saturday on its website, but had not updated the list on Sunday.

Setting the right tone is key to copywriting success | WSI Simply Social

If you want to keep the interest of your reader, you have to speak their language. This makes tone an important part of skilful copywriting. If you are writing copy for your website?s blog, setting the right tone is especially important because you have to keep your reader engaged, or they will simply leave your site. There are hundreds of industry blogs online that are all competing for your reader?s interest and at any one time, the typical online reader also multiple tabs open on their screen.

Picking a conversational tone is a good way to engage with your online reader. This means addressing the reader directly and adopting an active voice instead of a passive voice. For example, instead of saying ?Orders can be placed here?, you should say ?Place your orders here?. Sentences written in the active voice are easier to understand and it also resembles spoken, or conversational, language.

In order to pick the right tone for your reader, you need to know who your reader is. This means doing some research into who your target market is. In the same way that you don?t speak to colleagues they way you would speak to your children, you shouldn?t write for business people in the same way that you write for teenagers. Some readers will expect a level of formality in your writing in order for them to take your business seriously.

Of course, tone is not just determined by who your reader is, but also by the context in which you are writing. The degree of friendliness and formality in your writing will also be determined by what you are writing about. This can also be compared to spoken conversation. People speak differently to friends when they are giving them advice, compared to when they are out socialising.

In the same way, you should adopt a different tone depending on the service that you are offering. For example, very friendly tone is appropriate for a wedding photographer writing to people that could choose to include him or her on their most special day. In comparison, someone looking for an financial advisor is likely to expect a more professional tone.

For helping getting contact that is engaging and speaks directly to your target market, contact WSI OMS to find out more about our copywriting services today!

Throughout Bloomberg?s speech, the sign language translator made her own signs such as dumbo ears for President Obama.

The Mayor then turned over the press conference to?New Jersey Governor?Chris Christie (Bobby Moynihan), who said that in New Jersey, ?We don?t get mad, we get even, so sleep with one eye open Sandy.?

Christie also brought his own Jersey translator, who similarly displayed wild signs to correspond with the governor?s speech.

Fantasy Nation Roleplay. Checking for Interest and Co-GM's.

Hello, my name is Brock10, and I was just wondering if anyone would like to help me out.

For a long time, I have been waiting for a good nation roleplay, specifically a fantasy one in a Song of Ice and Fire vain. I want intrigue, diplomacy, and war, where people can create their own nations and races, and interact with others. I have an idea for a race and culture etc that make up my nation, however, I would like someone to help me as a Co-GM. I have never made a nation RP before, and I find the task daunting. Someone more experienced would be helpful.

I would also require interest, at least 5 people I would say. If anyone is at all interested, please, please help me make this. I have been waiting for something to come up, and I have decided it is time to go and do it myself. Thankyou.

Brock10.

Electing a President in a Microtargeted World - Gretchen Gavett ...

The 2012 election cycle is remarkable for how much information the campaigns have about voters. Using microtargeting ? a system of gathering and analyzing enormous amounts of data on behavior and opinions ? both the Obama and Romney camps are drilling down on which voters matter, how to best reach them, and with what message. The goal is to figure out which persuadable voters to spend energy ? and dollars ? on, in the hope of moving the dial just slightly in their favor. It's a world where hundredths of a percentage point matter.

Ken Strasma, president of Strategic Telemetry, knows this world well. A former campaign manager, Strasma started his company in 2003 to find a better way to predict who the true persuadables are in a campaign, and to find smart ways to target messaging towards them. He's worked on over 1,000 political campaigns, including John Kerry and Barack Obama's presidential races, as well New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's successful 2009 run. He's involved in Obama's current campaign, though not on a day-to-day level.

Strasma and I talked on the phone about how microtargeting has changed over the years ? both for campaigns and businesses ? and where he sees it moving in the future. This is an edited interview of our conversation.

When you talk about scores in microtargeting, what does that mean?

Microtargeting is really all about predicting an attitude or behavior, and the end product is what we call a score, which is just a percent likelihood of someone exhibiting that attitude or behavior. So if we've done a survey to see who cares about global warming, then every voter in a state might get a score on their voter file saying that this is how likely we are to say they care about global warming.

If we're launching a new type of bicycle and we want to know how likely it is that this person is a bicycle rider, we would apply that score, saying: here's the likelihood that this person is a bicycle rider in the market for a new bike. Scores are just likelihoods that we've predicted with these various analytics algorithms. ...

How do you measure success when you work on political campaigns?

We like to think that good targeting can provide a few percentage points improvement for a campaign. It's not going to take, you know, a candidate who is polling at 20% and get them a little bit [closer to winning]. But someone who's a point or two behind, it can make the difference. ...

We measure success by both win/loss, and also by being able to demonstrate that we've improved the campaign's percentage of the vote and cut costs.

What are some of the key differences are between Obama's 2008 campaign and what you're seeing in this one?

Definitely the scale. In 2004, microtargeting was a fairly new concept. In 2008, ... microtargeting was a key part of everything we did, from the Iowa caucuses to the general election. In this election, the campaign has a very large in-house data team dealing with all kinds of targeting analytics and also the online operations. And also, I should, in fairness, acknowledge that the Romney campaign also is taking its place here and has a much more robust targeting and digital operation than John McCain did.

In your work, do you only focus on the metrics side, or do you decide what sort of messaging would go out in targeted ads?

We help people decide which message [to send out] of a set of messages. So while we wouldn't be crafting the ads or mailings ourselves, if the media consultant says it has five different television ads they're considering running, we might tell them, for a given show, which ad is most likely to resonate with the viewers of that show.

The same with the mailing. We can take a suite of issues, see which ones model as being the ones that voters most likely to care about, so that the mailings going to them is the one they care about the most. ...

As limited as time and money are in a campaign, we're on a even more limited resource ? the voter's attention span ? because they're getting inundated with information. If you've got only about three seconds from the time they take a piece of mail out of their mailbox to when they throw it away, you want to make sure that the headline issue on that piece of mail is the one they care about the most. And microtargeting ads do that.

What were some of Obama's key features that you would use to market him, to tell a story based on the data you had?

One of the things about 2008 was, early on, there was the one key issue on most Democratic primary voters' minds: the war in Iraq, where he had a very different position from the Republicans, and even some of the Democratic primary field. And then by the general election, when the economic meltdown had started, really the economy was the top of peoples' minds.

So those issues weren't really things that depended that much on targeting for, because that basically what the campaigns were talking about.

It was very interesting to be able to model the secondary issues on people's minds, even if we knew that the economy was number one, pretty much as it is today. There would be other issues that people would care about. In the context of the economy, you know, what's more important to you? Is it unemployment benefits? Is it creating jobs? Is it the mortgage crisis?

... Or what other issues is it? Is it the environment? Is it education? So one of the things we would do would be to ask people their top two issues, so that if one issue like Iraq or the economy was swamping all the others, we would still get a second important issue that the voter cared about.

You said here that you would just ask people. Is there where you get your data, or is it also from browser cookies and other sources of information?

A large combination. I like to say that we get our data three ways: We ask, we observe, and we test. So the asking is generally three sources: telephone surveys, door-to-door canvassing, and online surveys. The surveys ? you mentioned cookies ? we might know what website one's visited, what search terms they've searched on, have they visited a campaign's website, and, if so, what activities that they've undertaken there.

And then the testing is really important because, as much as you could ask someone if they're undecided or if an issue matters to them, often times people don't really know what goes into their decision about either a candidate or a product. There's a combination of features and attributes that make the candidate or the product appealing to them, and being able to just test different ways of presenting an ad and seeing how people respond is very valuable.

So we'll do a lot of A/B testing with online ads.

We'll also do randomized experiments where we take a test sample and a control sample and do a particular treatment to one group and see how the purchasing or voting behavior is different between the two. And you often get some interesting and not intuitive results that are quite different from what would be if you just asked the voter or the consumer their preferences.

It reminds me of a quote of yours from Sasha Eisenberg's book Victory Lab: "We knew who ... people were going to vote for before they decided."

Right. People were telling us they were undecided and we felt that it was likely that they were actually just not engaged yet. And by asking a number of issue questions, we were able to very accurately predict which candidate they would end up supporting once they were engaged.

Does this also apply when you're looking to marketing a product?

It definitely does, especially in the case of a new product entering the market. But if we're able to describe different attributes of it and test it and model how people would respond to those different attributes, then we're able to make a prediction about who the likely consumers are once the product does launch.

What advice would you give businesses and organizations thinking about doing this kind of work?

The first step is always the same and that's saving and collecting as much data as you possibly can. Often times a company will collect data on who their customers are, who's bought a product. But for a while, it would [also be useful to collect the] tens of thousands of names of people they've mailed or called who haven't bought the product. Saving that information is equally important for both successful and non-successful prospects. Then [you] can model the likelihood of someone buying the product if they're solicited.

[Then you need to] standardize your data, if you can. You can't do any modeling if you don't have good data to start with.

What are some of the biggest surprises that you've found doing this work over the past decade? Is there moment when you had an "aha" feeling?

One is that the kind of features someone has on their telephone matters. It's something we've puzzled over for a long time because, intuitively, it makes sense that someone who has caller ID, call forwarding, call waiting, those type of features, is better able to screen their calls. Maybe the skewed data we're seeing here is just the effect of those people being harder to reach, or only reachable when they want to be reached.

It is very similar to the problem with calling landlines as opposed to cell phones. And going door-to-door, you underrepresent people in security-locked apartments. With online surveys, you miss out on people who aren't online. Every type survey misses out on some slightly different group of people. The key is to use as many different avenues as possible.

Another surprise that pops up quite often in politics is motorcycle ownership: it doesn't make someone more Democratic or more Republican. The interesting thing about the motorcycle owner is it makes you less easily categorized on. If someone is just like the Democrat on most of their attributes but ride a motorcycle, they are more likely to be a little bit libertarian, probably against gun control laws and helmet laws. And so that pushes them against the natural Democratic tendencies, based on their other data.

And the same holds for a Republicans. You could have someone who looks very Republican, based on their race, ethnicity, education, but if you factor in that they're a motorcycle rider, they are much more likely to be pro-choice and against government censorship of the Internet and other issues like that.

So motorcycle riding is a good caution flag for not making assumptions based on the rest of what you know about a person.

When people complain about microtargeting as an invasion of privacy, how do you respond?

[I] point out that this information is generally volunteered voluntarily. It comes from discount cards that you use in a supermarket, or registration cards that you fill out. So ... people are making the choice to give up that data.

What really shocks people is when they realize how much of it is out there. When people tell me that they're concerned about that, I advise them: Don't use a supermarket discount card if you don't have to. Don't fill out the survey questionnaires that you get with a product if you don't want to. It's very different in the United States from other countries. Almost every other country has much stricter privacy laws than the United States. So when we've been doing microtargeting in other countries, the available data is definitely less.

What's new and exciting in the microtargeting world?

Two of the more exciting things in what we're working on are real-time microtargeting and the online space.

For real time, it's gone from taking maybe a couple of weeks to now just a few days to get results back from a survey and crunch the numbers and build scores. ...

We're able to update scores in near real time; ... it will take about a third of a second for us to get a new piece of information in, for it to ripple through the system, update, and predict its scores.

Does that make you able to predict better or just predict faster?

Predict faster. The underlying technology is still largely the same. We're still running the same types of numbers.

Now, I should say that the technology has improved in ways that make the predictions better as well, largely because there are some algorithms that would take so long to run, especially the machine-learning, artificial intelligence algorithm ... and neural networks. It just wasn't practical to leave something running before; ... whereas now it might take half an hour to run an algorithm that, years ago, took months. ...

And how has the digital space changed what you do?

It's a really intriguing space for us, because we've spent so much time and effort trying to get information out of people, calling them, knocking on their doors, etc. And now suddenly, through Twitter and Facebook and other online social networking, people are volunteering this information in huge tidal waves we've never seen before.

Are they doing this purposefully? Are you asking for the information or are you just reading through it?

It's just reading what's out there, active social listening. ... We also do formal online surveys, [but] the real volume is what people are volunteering about themselves. So where it used to be that you had to ask someone: "which candidate do you support? Which product do you like?" These people are telling us that in far greater volume than we could ever solicit directly.

The trick is that they're also telling us what they had for breakfast and that their cat looks cute in a sweater and other things. ... What's key is sifting through all of that to find the meaningful nuggets, and also sifting through the way people speak online.

Computers are notoriously bad at detecting sarcasm. So if someone tweets that they love Sarah Palin as much as they love a root canal, a basic actual leverage processing algorithm is going to classify that as a tweet that's positive towards Sarah Palin because it says "loves Sarah Palin." So we've been working a lot with coming up with our artificial intelligence text processing routines that will allow us to actually capture the meaning of a tweet or a Facebook post, as opposed to just saying there's this many about Obama and this many about Romney.
